Biomedical Applications
Immunoassays have been used in biochemistry for many years to detect, identify, and study molecules, and applications range from disease identification to drug development. Immunoassays have grown to be so important to the modern pharmaceutical and medical industries that their development now represents a multibillion dollar market. Whilst the chemical design of the immunoassays determines which biomolecular interaction is to be studied, a high precision transducer is required to monitor the interaction without using tags.
Stratophase’s
unique sensing
technology detects minute
changes on surfaces and is therefore a highly sensitive method of
detecting and
quantifying binding kinetics in an immunoassay reaction. A major
advantage
derives from the fact that no fluorescent, magnetic or other tagging of
the
sample is required and this is because the approach is sufficiently
sensitive
to directly detect the physical changes in an immunoassay surface as
the bimolecular
interaction occurs. The dynamics of binding can also be studied in real
time as
the surface can be monitored continually and this enables even more
information
to be gathered on the immunoassay reaction.
Selectivity is enhanced because the depth to which the
surface is probed
can be varied: this in turn gives excellent selectivity against unbound
molecules
and more information on the binding event helping of course to
differentiate
non-specific binding.
The
Company’s sensor platform provides a standard flat
glass surface upon which almost all immunoassays can be fabricated. Furthermore it is also
possible to fabricate
arrays on single detection chips enabling multiplexed detection with a
common
readout system. Stratophase's SpectroSens
products are compatible
with standard immunoassays and yet they have the capability to offer
enhancements in detection over other products such as SPR.
