Magnesium-doped PPLN for RGB and
Mid-IR wavelength conversion systems

Magnesium-doped PPLN (MgO:PPLN) Crystals

Magnesium-doped Periodicaly Poled Lithium Niobate (MgO:PPLN) offers high efficiency wavelength conversion for visible and mid-infrared applications. Adding 5% Magnesium-Oxide to Lithium Niobate significantly increases the optical and photorefractive resistance of the crystal while preserving its high nonlinear coefficient. This allows more stable operation at visible wavelengths and lower temperature operation than a similar undoped crystal. Specially developed for Red-Green-Blue (RGB) generation and high power Mid-IR operation, our proprietary MgO:PPLN poling process offers high quality material even at shorter periods.

Magnesium-doped PPLN (MgO:PPLN) SHG Gratings

Our proprietary Magnesium-doped PPLN poling process creates high fidelity periods from 4.5μm to 33μm+ and is ideal for volume manufacture. As shown above, our MgO:PPLN domains are poled through the entire thickness of the sample, providing maximum optical aperture. Below is a list showing our range of off-the-shelf MgO:PPLN crystals for the most popular nonlinear parametric processes; Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and Optical Parametric Oscillation/Generation (OPO/OPG).

Standard PPLN Crystal LayoutEach MgO:PPLN crystal includes multiple gratings for flexible temperature and wavelength operation. Our crystals are AR coated and polished to: <λ/4 flatness, parallel to ±5minutes, with better than 20-10 scratch-dig and fewer than two 100μm edge chips per facet. All of our Magnesium-doped PPLN products undergo rigorous quality inspection, are supplied clip-mounted off-the shelf and are fully compatible with our range of PPLN accessories.

MgO:PPLN for Second Harmonic GenerationSHG Interaction

Our SHG crystals are designed to frequency double a wide range of common laser wavelengths. Each crystal type is available in three lengths; 1mm for short pulsed pump sources and 10mm or 20mm for longer pulses or continuous wave (cw) pump sources.

MgO:PPLN for Difference Frequency GenerationDFG Interaction

DFG allows wavelengths in the 2-4.5µm range to be generated by mixing two shorter wavelengths in a suitable PPLN crystal. Our DFG crystals are designed to mix the frequencies of a Nd:YAG laser and a tunable Ti-Sapphire (or similar) lasers. The output wavelength can be tuned with each PPLN grating by adjusting the input laser wavelength and varying the PPLN temperature.

20mm & 40mm clip-mounted PPLN

Key Features:

  • MgO-doped PPLN (5% MgO)
  • AR coated; input facet <1%R @ pump, output facet <2% @ DFG wavelengths
  • Multiple gratings; flexibile tuning via temperature, grating or pump wavelength selection
  • High efficiency generation of 2-5μm

MgO:PPLN for Optical Parametric Generation/OscillationOPO Interaction

Our OPO crystals are designed to be pumped using a wide variety of laser sources with wavelengths in the region of 1064nm. These crystals can also be used for other applications such as optical parametric generation and optical parametric amplification.

Magnesium-doped PPLN OPO Wavelength Range

Our MgO:PPLN OPOs operate over a broader temperature range than standard PPLN, allowing wider mid-infrared tuning from a single device. Coarse wavelength tuning is achieved by moving the focussed pump laser between gratings, while finer wavelength tuning is achieved by adjusting temperature. Our MgO:PPLN OPO crystals are designed for continuous wavelength generation throughout the 1410nm to 4335nm range from a 1064nm pump laser.

Based on the same design layout as a standard PPLN crystal, our MgO:PPLN OPO crystals are fully compatible with the clip kits, ovens and temperature controllers on our PPLN accessories page.
